Video game fighting expert Justin Wong must be looking for some stronger competition. In the last few weeks, he has been sharing his personal formula for success so that fans of Street Fighter IV and Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 can improve their skills.

In an earlier column, Wong touched on the importance of utilizing the training rooms to create the muscle memory needed for chaining combos together. His most recent article is a reminder to all the “training mode monsters” that they must also learn how to adapt to their environment.

“Not being able to land your combos against a moving target (Computer/Human opponent) is what a lot of players suffer from.

“The computer will stand, crouch, jump, spam an unsafe move and more, but this is beneficial for the player because you will be able to change up the type of combos due to the situation.”

Wong also suggested that you find players that are similar in talent whenever possible as well as a consistent sparring partner. He cites the problems with testing your abilities against tougher opponents.

“Obviously, the best type of training is playing against a human opponent because they are more strategic and skillful than the current CPU AI in fighting …

To celebrate my recent, and most likely temporary, inauguration into the top 100 ranked King of the Hill in Gears of War 3, I thought I’d share some tips on how to become a better Gears player. I note that a good deal of players online don’t do very basic things which could make their life easier, so hopefully even you Gearheads learn a thing or two from these pointers!

10. Get comfortable with your starting weapons

Gears of War 3 is no longer a single-gun game; you have options available to you. There are six options for starting weapons, each one favoring a different type of playstyle. You need to figure out what you’re most comfortable with. Here’s a general guideline.

Retro lancer: high power at close range. Accuracy is difficult with the recoil, but that can be mitigated through fanning/bursting. One clip is capable of downing nearly an entire enemy team when active. Retro charge great for destroying people hiding behind corners. Best for players who value power and who like close-range warfare.

Lancer: medium power, fantastic at long range, very accurate. With it’s instant kill, the chainsaw, though risky, can be …

It’s not uncommon to hear Gears referred to as a hodgepodge of racial stereotypes, especially when speaking of the boisterous Augustus “Cole Train” Cole. Cliff Bleszinski, lead designer behind Gears 3, takes exception to that thinking, though–Cole isn’t a stereotype at all, he says.

“And those of you citing Cole as some bad stereotype – guys, that’s just Lester being Lester. We introduced Jace as a more laid back character as a contrast to Cole’s enthusiasm (which, after playing his sequence, is his way of overcompensating for not being the centre of the universe and having to risk his neck for a can of beans now along with some aches and pains).”

Lester Speight, for those of you that don’t know, is the voice actor and inspiration behind the Cole Train. Speight used to be a football player for Morgan State University, who is especially famed for his hilarious Terry Tate commercials for Reebok.

Personally, I’m not particularly concerned over whether Cole is a stereotype inasmuch as I am concerned about his mental health, if the Thrashball section of Gears 3 is anything to go by.

For those itching to sink their chainsaw machine guns into some alien flesh, the Gears of War 3 opening cinematic is now available for your viewing pleasure.

The video was released this past Friday and the overall response from fans has been positive.  We won’t discuss the details of the video here, as there are always those who do not want to see these sorts of spoilers until release day, but suffice it to say that the level of awesomeness is pretty high for this one.

If you would like to check out the cinematic, you can do so by heading over to the GoW Series YouTube Channel.

3D is all the craze right now, both with movie makers and game developers.  Gears of War 3 is the latest game to announce its plans to implement 3D technology into its game play.

In an interview with Eurogamer, executive producer Rod Fergusson let the world know that Gears of War 3 is going 3D.  “It’s still fledgling technology. It’s still a niche feature. But it was something we could support, so we felt, why not?”

There are some catches to Gears of War 3 going 3D however.  Fergusson says that the decision to implement 3D happened “late in the process” of development, and as such the game was not built for 3D from the ground up, and instead uses a post-production method of adding the 3D element to the game.  This process also sacrifices resolution, as the game will not render a full 720p, instead coming in somewhere in the five hundreds.

I am not a good person.

Or, so I’m told, anyway. Be it XBL, PSN or Steam, I’m constantly inundated by cries and BAAAW’ings about how cheap I am, how I make the game less fun, how I shouldn’t be allowed to play games like I do.

You’ve probably heard, if not partaken in the nonsense, too. Certain practices are frowned upon depending on which game we’re talking about, usually revolving around mechanics that are considered to require no ‘skill’ to execute. Noob tubing in Call of Duty. Hado trap (WHAT!?) in Street Fighter. Then there are behaviors which are like rites of passage for acceptance within a game’s community. In Gears, for example, knowing how to handle a shotgun means you are worthy of respect. Every game seems to have a list of rules not present in the game proper, but upheld fervently by the community in an effort to arbitrarily privilege certain types of play than others. Those who can play well in spite of those rules/constraints, are considered to be the superior players, those who do not are fools, novices.

All of these factor into the wider issue of ‘sportsmanship’ in video games. Yes, you read that right. Sportsmanship–upholding a …

Our favorite dudebro of the industry had some interesting things to say during the conference in LA this week.

First, in regards to the Gears 3 storyline: speaking to Jim Sterling of Destructoid, Cliff revealed that he was puzzled that people dismiss the narrative in the Gears of War franchise.

“People say, ‘yeah, I tried the campaign, but whatever.’ Gears of War 3‘s campaign is very important to us, and we’re going to have the longest damn campaign of the series in Gears 3. With these Pulp Fiction elements we’re adding, you get a better perspective of characters like Cole and Baird.

“But yeah, I dont get why people write it off either. (Laughs) The amount of work we put into it …”

As some of you might recall, Epic Games called upon the expertise of novelist Karen Traviss for Gears of War 3, and before that, author Joshua Ortega was brought in to add a touch of ‘personal drama’ to the story. Interestingly, the counter-argument to my questioning whether or not Anya is being changed to fit gender stereotypes is that player feedback must have taken the narrative into consideration, and didn’t find beta Anya to accurately reflect ‘real’ Anya. But, …

Full disclosure: the post has been edited to address some of the issues brought up in the comments.

Oh, one of these posts, you may be thinking to yourself. Let’s just get some things out of the way before I get to my criticism, shall we? I have an active investment on the franchise–for example, I played the beta for almost 100 hours. This isn’t a random person that caught wind of the ‘grave injustice’ being done to women in this game or something. I adore the franchise. Nor am I casting judgement on Epic for changing Anya; I am not saying they are misogynists, or sexists or anything like that. I have no way of knowing that. If someone steals your wallet, however, you don’t care what kind of a person they are. You care about the action, that they stole your wallet. Likewise, I have no idea what kind of people the developers are, nor does it matter. What matters is this: Anya, the first playable female in the Gears franchise, is being changed, and it appears she’s being changed to appease people who uphold normative gender stereotypes.

A few days ago, Kotaku wrote an article …

I’ve spent a few hours playing the Gears 3 beta today and I’m so impressed with it that I had a difficult time ripping myself off the TV to write some impressions up for you guys. Excitement to talk about the experience got the better of me though, so here we are!

First thing’s first: the game is not immediately enraging to play because of connection, hosts or lag. The game runs rather smoothly–more so than whatever they’ve been implementing on Gears 2 (since they’ve been testing out their new infrastructure in the updates to Gears 2). There are still some ‘HOW THE FUCK DID THAT HAPPEN, I SHOT THE GUY?!?’ moments, but they’re not very frequent. For the most part I felt like any time I died, it was my fault–and not the result of not actually being where the game shows me, as was often the case in Gears 2.

Secondly, the new arsenal of weapons has effectively spiced the gameplay up. I’m not sure how I feel about the game revolving around power weapons though–especially since it seems as if the spawn timers for power weapons is much, much quicker than 2. Hopefully this is ironed out come launch …

Also known as the ‘Fate of Carmine’ campaign, which up until recently had been reported to lean towards saving Carmine. Via sales of avatar items and real shirts, Gears fans managed to raise a six figure check for the charity. And, because of that, Dude Huge would like to thank you:

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEfAeSKQzsA]

Now, the question is: will Carmine live? Or will he die? We’ll have to wait until the release of Gears 3, it seems, to find out!
